How do pressure points affect a swing?

Ben Hogan talked about pressure points in his book,The Five Fundamentals of Golf.  You will often see reference to pressure points in golf articles, especially when discussing the grip. So, what are pressure points, and how do they affect your golf swing.  And why, as a golfer should you care?

Is this what golfers call the trigger finger? How would I control that and what would be the point?

Yes, this is what most golfers refer to as the "Trigger Finger." The trigger finger is also known as the clubhead lag pressure point. The clubhead lag pressure point senses the clubhead and gives the player the ability to direct their hands and lagging clubhead to the inside aft quadrant of the ball or an aiming point.
The aiming point concept allows the player to direct their hands and clubhead to along lines and paths so to make proper club/ball contact.
Clubhead Lag maybe consistered the secret of golf. Without it the line of compression cannot be sustained. The line of compression is from when the ball is impacted by the clubface and is sustained through separation and is only about 3/4 of an inch which is not very long. So, as the clubhead orbits around its axis the ball will separate 90 degrees to the clubface.
By controling your clubhead lag pressure point the player controls the clubhead direction.
The clubhead lag technique is always both aiming and thrusting. When passive it primarily aiming the lag pressure point. When active it is primarily thrusting the lag pressure point. As the clubhead orbits it does not seek the ball but a delivery line. The player can now be specific to the point at which this lag pressure point is directed.
The player can train themself to sense and direct their clubhead lag pressure point through the use of the Pure Ball Striker training device. The player will be able to sense their clubhead lag pressure point from the shortest putt to the longest drive and all clubs in between.

When I try directing my hands just to the ball, I cut across it and worry about making contact. A pro told me to think like I was going to throw a rock at the ball when I was at the top of my swing.

That just brought me across the ball. Would this pure strike item help me with coming across?

Todd,
Great question!
Yes, it will help you sense where to direct your thrust. Try to remember it could be directed at the ball or an aiming point that is not the ball. So, depending on the players hand speed the ball might not be the good reference.
Todd-you might try aiming forward of the ball along the plane line and/or target line. From the top of your swing where the hands are just in line with you trail shoulder direct your hand downward outward and forward towards your aiming point.
If you have any more question just ask! BUT try the PURE BALL STRIKER it works!
